Material Game Platform
Client: Sto
Year: 2024
The Material Game Platform was a concept developed for architectural materials manufacturer Sto, exploring new tools for architects and designers to playfully experiment with Sto’s material libraries.
The project was developed directly with Sto’s marketing and materials teams, with the brief of challenging the existing workflows of material specification in architectural design.
Using Sto’s existing PBR material scan library, we developed a game platform that used a series of interchangeable architectural typologies, enabling users to test material combinations in abstracted architectural scenarios. The environment employed real time interactions, with dynamic lighting and weather systems, providing game elements that allowed for testing both exterior and interior scenarios. We also developed custom material shaders in Unreal Engine 5 that utilised Sto’s range of colour systems to ensure visual accuracy.
As a proof-of-concept, still and video promotional imagery for Sto’s online material database was created using the Material Game Platform, demonstrating the diverse range of material finishes possible with Sto’s products and the possibilities of real-time rendering using game engines and PBR materials.
